Miért város?

Az elmúlt háromezer év történelme értelmezhetetlen a városok nélkül. A városok felelősek a Föld fejlődéséért, egyszerre helyei az innovációk létrejöttének és a világméretű problémáknak is. A város a verseny és együttműködés, a szegénység és gazdagság helye. A 21. század közepére az emberiség több mint 70%-a városokban fog élni, a tendencia egyre gyorsulva erősödik, a fejlett világ nagyvárosai lassabban, míg a fejlődő világ nagyvárosai még sohasem látott ütemben. A városokról egyre több részlettel ismertetnek meg minket a résztudományok, de a mi feladatunk az, hogy az egész rendszert az önma- ga egyszerű működésében modellezve tudjuk az alapoktól kezdve újra értelmezni. Az elmúlt viharos 120-130 év történéseit vizsgáló rövidlátó lencsénket félretéve, a jövő váratlan változásainak felismerése érdekében, a városi rendszerek egészét tekintve kell nyitottnak lennünk ahhoz, hogy fel tudjunk készülni egy jövendőre. A város az embereké, sokrétűségükkel, különös egyedi, magukkal hordozott végeérhetetlen történetükkel, egy hely ahol történeteik egymáshoz kapcsolódnak.

Why Cities?

By the middle of the 21st century, more than 70% of the humankind will live in cities. This tendency escalates in an accelerated way: the developed cities more slowly, while the metropolises of the developing world are growing with an unbelievable speed. The city is the answer of the human kind to the challenges of the nature, representing the urge of self and race preservation of the humans. The history of the past three thousand years cannot be interpreted without the cities that developed simultaneously with the states of the written history, that are responsible for the development of the Earth, because they are the places of innovations and world-sized problems. The city is the place for competition and cooperation, for poverty and wealth. Different sciences describe the cities with more and more details, but the task of the 21st century is to interpret the whole system from the bases with models of its own simple functioning. Without looking at the happenings of the past 120-130 years, in order to recognize the sudden changes of the future, we need to be opened for regarding the whole urban system to be prepared for the next city of the future.
